Origins · Chapter 02
Natural and laboratory-grown
The same gem material, formed by different routes—and why clear origin language matters.
Origin is not a hidden quality grade. It is a material fact that should be stated plainly, documented clearly, and considered according to the buyer’s own priorities.
What they share
Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds are made of diamond material and share essentially the same optical and physical properties. A laboratory-grown diamond is not the same as a simulant such as cubic zirconia or moissanite.
How their origins differ
Natural diamonds formed within the earth under geological conditions over immense spans of time. Laboratory-grown diamonds are produced from a diamond seed using controlled high-pressure, high-temperature growth or chemical vapor deposition.
HPHT and CVD in plain language
HPHT growth recreates high pressure and high temperature around a carbon source. CVD growth deposits carbon from a carbon-rich gas onto a diamond seed in a chamber. Either process can produce gem-quality material, and some stones receive post-growth treatment.
Why appearance alone is not enough
Well-grown laboratory diamonds can look the same as natural diamonds without specialized examination. Laboratories use advanced instruments and growth-related features to identify origin and disclose relevant post-growth treatment.
Worth remembering: Origin should be verified by documentation, not guessed from appearance.
Clear language protects the decision
In the United States, the FTC says laboratory-created origin should be disclosed immediately before the word “diamond” and just as conspicuously. Descriptions such as laboratory-grown or laboratory-created distinguish the product from a mined diamond without suggesting that it is an imitation.
A preference, not a universal verdict
Buyers may weigh origin, price, rarity, production, availability, symbolism, or resale expectations differently. Those are distinct considerations. The useful comparison begins only after origin and report information are explicit.
Essential language
- Natural diamond
- A diamond formed through geological processes in the earth.
- Laboratory-grown diamond
- Diamond material grown in a controlled production environment.
- HPHT
- High Pressure High Temperature, a diamond-growth process.
- CVD
- Chemical Vapor Deposition, a process that grows diamond in layers from carbon-rich gas.
- Post-growth treatment
- A process applied after laboratory growth, often to modify color.
Questions to take with you
- Is origin stated clearly on the product page, invoice, and laboratory report?
- Does the report name the growth process or any post-growth treatment?
- Am I comparing natural and laboratory-grown options on the priorities that matter to me?
- Is a stone being described as laboratory-grown diamond rather than as a simulant?
